Frequently Asked Questions

Movebot Product

How secure is Movebot?

Movebot has been built on Couchdrop's virtual filesystem technology and our team takes security very seriously.

During a migration, Movebot never retains or stores any of your files and employs in-transit encryption at every step of the process.

How long do migrations take?

That is a tricky question as it comes down to the source and destination platform limitations more than anything else. With that said, Movebot has been clocked at 270TB per day for a single transfer, so you can rest assured that our platform is fast. Very very fast.

Can I add other users to see the migration?

Yes absolutely.

Can Movebot migrate versions?

Yes. Movebot can migrate versions, permissions, and other metadata.

Can Movebot migrate from on-premise to cloud?

Absolutely, and back the other way as well. Movebot has an agent that can be installed on any OSX or Windows server to facilitate on-prem transfers.

Can Movebot migrate Google to Google / SharePoint to SharePoint / Dropbox to Dropbox?

Yes, Movebot can do tenant-to-tenant migrations. Check out our integrations page for more details.

Terminology

What is a Cloud Tenant?

When we mention Cloud Tenants in Movebot, we’re typically referring to a specific instance in a cloud storage provider, such as an organization’s Google Workspace account. Movebot can move from one Google Workspace to another Google Workspace account, or cloud tenant to cloud tenant.

What is Data Migration?

A data migration invovles moving data from one platform to another by copying files in the source into the destination. Typically, a Migration involves moving all of the data from a source into the destination, but Movebot allows selective data moving down to the folder level instead of an all-or-nothing approach required by some tools.

What is Data Sovereignty?

Regulations where a country or locale has jurisdiction on how data is processed and stored. For Movebot, this is typically in reference to isolating data processing to a specific region for compliance standards, such as keeping HIPAA data in the United States at all times.

What is a Delta Migration?

A delta migration (or delta sync) compares the source and destination and only moves files that don’t exist at the destination or that have different modification metadata by comparing the modified timestamps between the source and destination platform. Find out more in our delta migration article.

What is a Discovery Scan?

An analysis of the source and destination platforms to determine the amount of data that will be moved and any potential obstacles so you can make changes before starting the migration process. Discovery scans are free to run in Movebot.

What is Filename Sanitization?

The process of altering file names by removing illegal characters so that the name is acceptable at the destination. Movebot can do this automatically with the option to use custom filename transformation rules.

What are Hot Storage, Cold Storage, and Archival Storage?

Different sectors of data lifecycle, based on access and retrieval times. Hot is the fastest to access with the highest cost while Archival is the slowest, used primarily for backups or archives where access is extremely rare or saved for rare specific circumstances and has a much lower cost as a result. Movebot can move data into any type.

What are NAS Devices?

Network Attached Storage devices. When connecting to an on-premise file-server with Movebot, Movebot can also move files from storage devices on the same Network.

What are Proprietary doctypes?

Unique document types developed by specific organizations that can only be fully modified in a particular platform, such as .gdoc. Movebot is able to convert these proprietary doctypes to a usable format.

What is Rate Limiting?

The limitation of the flow of data that enters or exits a storage platform. This helps control network traffic to limit DDOS attacks and other legitimate uses but can greatly slow transfer speeds for specific platforms.

What does Zero Infrastructure mean?

Infrastructure refers to all of the devices, connections, and settings required for functionality. In migrations, this would often involve setting up, configuring, and managaing virtual machines. Zero infrastructure means you do none of this infrastructure management or upkeep, as it is all done automatically for you.
